One of my New Years wishes was to learn After Effects in hopes to incorporate myself as an artist into a rising industry. After completing the basic courses/tutorials from Gnomon, I put together a small 30 second reel. It's not much, in fact it may be full of mistakes. Nonetheless it is my very first project using the medium and i'm quite psyched!
I hope you all enjoy it just as much as I did making it.

I shall continue learning this beast and making more work. Stay tuned to my vimeo for future works!

Circus Girl

Update:

Did I mentioned back in October, that i rummaged through my mother's fabric closet while visiting and found a beautiful circus red and white striped cotton fabric?
To my surprise, she sent it to me a few weeks back. It's quite an old fabric since she's had it for over a decade. She says she wanted to make me a top with matching sailor buttoned shorts for when i was a teenager. Yeah it's been that long.
I really wanted to think this through because only a yard was available of this. I finally gathered the courage to use a 50's blouse pattern and I think it turned out quite beautiful. Don't you?

I'll get to wear the whole outfit when it gets warm enough in New York...here's to hoping!

Wow it's been ten thousand years since i've blogged to my fellow bloggers!
My apologies. I would totally go into Nirvana's 'all apologies' right now, but i'll refrain. You all know you're singing it right now in your heads.
Anywho so i just figured out how to do this Etsy.com wiggit thingy onto here. It's kind of like an ad from my blog to the etsy shop. How genius!

I'm having some massive sales because I would like to get rid of as much art (and stuff) as possible before moving this summer. June to be precise. So please help and spread the word!

Etsy Shop, GNOMON and moving...

UPDATE...

I've been away for a couple of weeks. I have loads of things going on at the moment.
Mainly, I've changed up my shop a bit. Re-designed the banner and the 'idea' of the shop. It's rather polished up at the moment.

For those of you who don't know, I am a huge vintage fan. HUGE!
Trying to make way for new inventory, for more excuses to shop, and of course to simply be able to close my closet doors, I have made a special section in my shop just for wonderful vintage finds. I am very excited for this!

I will also be moving to California as of the summer. As we all know cross country moves are extremely exhausting, time consuming and expensive. Please visit the shop and buy something! ...or just stop by and say hello?

I am currently taking workshops and doing tutorials from Gnomon school to catch up with what I missed out of during College. I am hoping to get the ball rolling here and learn some techniques that will lead me in the industry.
Many thanks to the folks who have suggested schools and classes in Cali. Thank you RAD for your suggestions! I will be continuing my art education part time as soon as I arrive to the west coast this summer. I can't wait to take all of those gorgeous figure painting, watercolor, drawing classes. And don't be surprised if one day, I have you as my professor!

As of now, i'm hitting the tutorials hard. Seriously it has taken me 5 days to get through the first After Effects demo...oy vey!
Like I said, lots of catching up to do!

Maria Malo-Molina was born in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba and raised in the
United States. She received her BFA in Painting with a minor in
Photography in 2006, from the Ringling School of Art and Design. While
attending Ringling School of Art she was awarded a space for a
semester in both Parsons in 2005 and Lamar Dodd School of Art in
Cortona Italy to focus on her independent studio practice. She has
traveled to various countries and is continuously fascinated with
cultures of which she draws inspiration from.

Her work ranges from painting, photography, installation, sculpture
and performance. Mixed media has always been an important part of her
work.
In her current works, Malo-Molina collects clippings from photographs
and printouts from various road trips and other travels including the
place she resides, New York City. She then reassembles and constructs
images of city escapes, urban streets and collossal buildings. After
embedding the materials to the panel, the surface of the painting is
worked slowly with glazes, transparent at times, which cover and
expose parts of the fabricated image. This process allows her to focus
on creating environments that evoke emotion, mood and individuality
for the collaged images. Her expansive palette reflects beautifully in
her paintings that maintain hefty color variations and subtle tonal
shifts. She states: ‘I am interested in fabricating saturated and rich
land masses, escapes of rooftop views and panoramas similarly to how
the memory would. It is mostly filled with drama and emotion.’

Malo-Molina has been exhibited in Pulse Contemporary Art Fair (Miami),
NYSP Gallery (New York City), Selby Gallery (Sarasota, Florida),
Crossley Gallery (Sarasota, Florida), City Museum of Washington D.C
and AR Contemporary Gallery in Milan, Italy.

New Paintings for a show.

Hello everyone!

I'm working on this new series of paintings for a show that is coming up. The opening is December 18th and I have about 2 and a half weeks to work on about 2 dozen paintings. It's a pretty ambitious project, but what can I say?
This series picks up on a few old paintings that date back to 2005. At that time I was fascinated with color and light abstraction within an environment. I was primarily looking at the works of J.M.W. Turner and loved how he accomplished massive space and depth with a somewhat limited palette.
This is the first painting of the series. I took a picture of my palette and my desk. And yes, I like to keep my area clean and organized.

I've been wanting to draw the incredible rooftop view from my tiny New York City 1-bedroom apartment. Or should I say sardine can?
I took some photos for detail references but this was drawn while sitting by the window.
The penciling is almost done, then the inking will happen.
After that it's a matter of studying color and light. The plan is to do three exact copies each one with a different light according to time of day, early morning, afternoon and sunset wIth a possible fourth for late night. A bit of 'a la Monet,' plein-air landscape painting.

I've been working on this painting for years..no joke!
I made this canvas originally when I was an undergrad during my junior year. I made the painting after 4 months of painstakingly looking at every inch of the reference. I wanted this painting to have a Philip Pearlstein look and feel. Well, after completing the painting, it turned out to be pretty awful. In my own disappointment I decided to cover it with white gesso and start anew.
Except that I didn't touch the canvas for 3 years. It was covered with sheets, cobwebs and tucked away inside the depths of my closet.
Last fall around October I finally came around to it and started this drawing which is almost complete. Hopefully, it won't take me as long to paint it.
I took a picture of my sketchbook to show my process, notes and who I look for references. I'm pretty methodical when it comes to planning and gathering references for a piece. Oh, and that's the stencil I made for the wallpaper of the back wall in the painting. I saw this cool shape on the side of a building across the street from my apartment. I liked it so much, I made it my wallpaper.
ps. I'm such a dog person, I added Aloo in the mirror reflection...:)

I'm so excited to finally have started a blog. Actually, this would be my second blog but lets not dwell in the past.

Looking through my old figure portfolio I found a handful of drawings that to this day I can proudly claim as mine.
I'll post the drawing and two close up shots.
